Vice-President Namadi Sambo at the weekend inaugurated various projects across Akwa Ibom State, including the new Accountant-General's office, the third Ring Road, the Fourth Flyover in Uyo, the Second Underground Drainage in Abak, and the Ikot Ekpene City Centre Plaza. During the inauguration, Sambo praised Governor Godswill Akpabio for giving the state a face-lift and restated the Federal Government's commitment to partnering with the state.
Federal Government Approves Ibaka Deep Seaport
Sambo announced that the Federal Government has approved the building of Ibaka Deep Seaport, a major infrastructure development for the state. He commended Akpabio's efforts in transforming Akwa Ibom, noting that the projects would enhance the state's socio-economic development.
Accountant-General's Office: A Boost for Civil Servants
At the Accountant-General's office, Akpabio said the new building would create a conducive working environment for workers and encourage improved productivity. He thanked the civil service for collaborating with the government in the implementation of policies and programmes. The State Accountant-General, Mr. Udo Isobara, revealed that the project cost N250 million. He said the building has five open apartments and 16 offices, each equipped with its own toilet, air conditioners, computers, scanners, cameras, and round-the-clock internet facility.
Sub-Treasury Offices Completed Across LGAs
Isobara also disclosed that 15 new sub-treasury offices have been completed in Ikono, Ini, Mkpat Enin, Nsit Ibom, Obot Akara, Okobo, Essien Udim, Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun, Ika, Urue Offong/Oruko, Onna, Itu, Oruk Anam, and Nsit Atai local government areas. These offices are expected to bring government services closer to the people.
Fourth Flyover and Other Infrastructure
Akpabio urged the Vice-President to ensure that the Federal Government refunds the money spent on repairing the Abak-Uyo Federal Road. He explained that the Fourth Flyover in Uyo, which has a 150-metre dual-carriage way with pedestrian walkways, was to divert traffic to Airport Road. Additionally, Akpabio said the state government is negotiating with the Ministry of Interior for the demolition and rebuilding of Abak Prisons.
The inauguration of these projects underscores the collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments to improve infrastructure and public services in Akwa Ibom. The completion of the sub-treasury offices and the approval of the Ibaka Deep Seaport are expected to have a lasting impact on the state's economy and governance.
