Nigeria Customs to Begin Yearly Recruitment, 2026 Exercise Set
Customs Announces Annual Recruitment, 2026 Exercise Set

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a major shift in its hiring policy, moving to an annual recruitment cycle that will replace the previous irregular and multi-year gaps between exercises. The announcement was made by Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, during a press briefing at the service headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, where he also unveiled the final list of successful candidates for the 2024/2025 recruitment exercise.

2026 Recruitment to Commence Later This Year

Adeniyi disclosed that the 2026 recruitment exercise would open later this year, with the goal of completing the entire process within a single calendar year, from advertisement to final list. This marks a significant departure from past practices, where recruitment exercises were held sporadically, often leaving prospective applicants in the dark for years.

"The Nigeria Customs Service is moving to an annual recruitment cycle. Recruitment will no longer be an occasional event undertaken every several years. It will be a standing, predictable, yearly process," Adeniyi said. He further added, "The 2026 Recruitment Exercise will open later this year, and it is my firm intention that it will be completed within a single calendar year, from advertisement to final list."

Why the Change?

The decision to adopt an annual recruitment cycle is aimed at improving manpower planning and ensuring that the service can replace retiring officers without delay. Adeniyi explained that the service has now developed the necessary screening, verification, and recruitment frameworks that were previously lacking, which caused significant delays during the 2024/2025 exercise.

"The systems, the screening architecture and the verification processes built during this exercise now exist, and they will not have to be built again," he stated. This new infrastructure is expected to streamline future recruitment processes, making them more efficient and timely.

For job seekers, the annual cycle provides much-needed certainty about when opportunities will arise, eliminating the long periods of uncertainty that have characterized past recruitment drives. This move is seen as a positive step towards transparency and predictability in the public service hiring process.

Over 3,800 Candidates Offered Appointments

In the just-concluded 2024/2025 recruitment exercise, the NCS offered appointments to 3,852 successful applicants. The breakdown reveals that 1,275 candidates were recruited into the Superintendent Cadre, 367 into the Inspectorate Cadre, and 2,210 into the Customs Assistant Cadre.

This substantial intake reflects the service's commitment to bolstering its workforce and addressing manpower needs across various operational levels. The annual recruitment policy is expected to create a more predictable hiring process, benefiting both the NCS and the thousands of Nigerians who aspire to join the service.

Impact and Future Outlook

The shift to annual recruitment is a strategic move that aligns with modern public service practices. It ensures a steady influx of new personnel, which is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and addressing attrition. With the 2026 exercise set to begin later this year, many are optimistic about the opportunities it will bring.

As the NCS prepares for its next recruitment cycle, the focus will be on leveraging the newly established systems to ensure a smooth and transparent process. This development is a welcome change for both the agency and prospective applicants, promising a more structured and reliable pathway to employment in Nigeria Customs.
