Head of Service Demands Accountability and Results in Civil Service Reform
The Federal Government has significantly intensified its efforts to reposition Nigeria's public service, issuing a renewed and urgent call for civil servants to fully embrace accountability, professionalism, and measurable performance as the core principles of governance. This directive was delivered by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a recent interaction with Capital FM in Abuja, which was closely monitored by The Guardian.
Civil Service as the Engine Room of Government
In her address, Walson-Jack framed the civil service as the essential engine room of government reform and policy execution. She emphasized that civil servants are not merely implementers of policy but are critical custodians of institutional continuity and governance stability. With a tone signaling great urgency, she challenged public servants to move decisively beyond routine administration and adopt a results-driven mindset, stressing that the credibility and effectiveness of government institutions rest heavily on their performance.
Rising Expectations and Constrained Resources
Walson-Jack noted that at a time when public expectations are rising dramatically and resources are increasingly constrained, the demand for transparency and prudent management of public funds has never been greater. She issued a stern warning that the failure to uphold financial regulations and service rules actively erodes public trust and severely undermines national development goals, posing a significant threat to Nigeria's progress.
Introduction of the "One Knowledge System" Initiative
As part of the ongoing comprehensive reforms, the Head of Service highlighted the introduction of the innovative "One Knowledge System." This capacity-building initiative is specifically designed to modernize the civil service through continuous learning, robust knowledge-sharing, and extensive leadership development. Walson-Jack explained that this program is expected to equip public servants with the essential tools and skills needed to effectively navigate a rapidly changing governance environment, ensuring they can meet contemporary challenges.
This reform push underscores the government's commitment to transforming the civil service into a more efficient, accountable, and performance-oriented institution, crucial for achieving sustainable national development and restoring public confidence in governance structures.
