The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Mustapha Yahaya, for impersonating a personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS). This marks the third time in a week that the command has apprehended a suspected impersonator, raising concerns about the prevalence of such crimes in the region.
Arrest During Routine Patrol
According to the command's spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the suspect was intercepted on Monday, 27 July 2026, at about 0100 hours during a routine patrol by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) along Bayan Gari in Bauchi metropolis. The patrol team, acting on intelligence-led policing, stopped the suspect for a routine check.
Upon questioning, Yahaya claimed to be a DSS personnel attached to the Bauchi State Command. However, further investigation revealed that the claim was false. “The suspect is not a member of the DSS,” Habib stated. The suspect, whose address is Ran Road, Bauchi, is currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged to court for prosecution upon completion of investigation.
Police Commissioner Warns Public
CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, mni, psc(+), has warned members of the public to be wary of impostors and to always demand proper identification from anyone claiming to be a security operative. “He further reiterated the Command’s commitment to rid the State of criminal elements and ensure public safety,” the statement read.
The police have noted an uptick in impersonation cases, with the suspect being the third such individual arrested within a week. This trend has prompted the command to intensify patrols and public awareness campaigns. Citizens are advised to verify the identity of any security personnel by requesting official identification and contacting the nearest police station if in doubt.
