Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has made a significant commitment to ensure a historic and peaceful transfer of power at the conclusion of his second term in office in 2027. The governor delivered this assurance during the Christmas church service held at St. James’ Anglican Church in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
A Pledge for a Historic First in Ogun
Governor Abiodun declared his administration's determination to achieve a seamless and rancour-free transition, which would mark a first in the 50-year history of Ogun State. He expressed confidence that his government would not only finish its tenure strongly but also successfully hand over to a successor.
"As we approach 2027, not only will we finish well and finish strong, by the grace of God, this administration will hand over successfully to a successor," Abiodun stated. He added, "It will be the first peaceful transition in the 50-year history of Ogun State. By God’s grace, I will sit down as your governor at my send-forth ceremony and also sit at the swearing-in ceremony of my successor."
Foundation in Governance and Economic Expansion
The governor linked his confidence to the tangible achievements recorded under his leadership. He highlighted solid governance, significant economic expansion, and a focus on people-centric development as the bedrock for this historic ambition.
Abiodun pointed to a dramatic growth in the state's economy, noting that the annual budget has ballooned from approximately ₦355 billion at the start of his administration to over ₦2.7 trillion currently. This, he said, reflects heightened economic activities and growing investor confidence in the state.
"Our economy has grown almost five times from what we met on the ground," the governor revealed. "New factories and industries are springing up across the state. We have reconstructed over 2,000 schools, created jobs, empowered farmers and expanded opportunities for our people — and we are not done yet. We need your prayers to finish strong."
He reaffirmed his commitment to impactful projects, citing the Gateway International Airport and other key infrastructure developments spread across the state's three senatorial districts as lasting legacies.
Christmas Message and Call for Compassion
Shifting focus to the festive season, Governor Abiodun used the occasion to admonish residents on the true essence of Christmas, which he said transcends mere celebration and merriment. He emphasized love, peace, and compassion for the vulnerable as the core principles.
"Many people think Christmas is about shopping or partying, but that is not what Christmas is about. Christmas is about love — loving your neighbour as yourself," he said. "Some people give what they no longer need, but God gave us a priceless gift. In the spirit of Christmas, we must remember to give to others and extend a hand of fellowship to the less privileged."
The governor also advised moderation in celebrations and cautioned against excessive alcohol consumption, urging citizens to embody Christ-like values in their thoughts and conduct.
Recognition and Spiritual Charge
In his sermon titled "Christmas Is God’s Best Gift to You," the church's Vicar, Venerable Tolulope Akinwande, described Christmas as the season God gave Himself to humanity through Jesus Christ. He urged believers to accept this gift and live transformed lives.
Ven. Akinwande also commended Governor Abiodun for what he termed purposeful and transformative leadership in Ogun State, offering prayers that the end of his tenure would surpass its beginning in success and peace.
