Cross River Governor Otu Launches Free Easter Transport, Vows Commuter Safety
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has officially introduced free transportation services across the state for the Easter holiday period, aiming to mitigate the effects of escalating transport expenses on local residents. This initiative, officially named the "Season of Sweetness Easter Free Transportation" program, was ceremoniously launched on Monday in Calabar, with the governor providing firm assurances regarding the safety and dependability of the services throughout the duration of the exercise.
Governor's Commitment to People-Centered Policies
Represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, Governor Otu characterized the program as fundamentally people-centered, highlighting that this marks the fourth iteration since he took office and emphasizing plans to continue it due to its positive impact on citizens. He encouraged residents to fully utilize the scheme, underscoring that comprehensive measures have been implemented to guarantee smooth and efficient operations. "We will continue to sustain this programme as it is people-centred and has continued to attract commendations nationwide. We also assure commuters of their safety throughout the period," Otu stated.
Expanded Services and Safety Measures
In a significant expansion of the initiative, the governor revealed that, in addition to complimentary road transport, free boat services have been arranged for riverine communities, covering routes such as Creek Town, while transport costs for inter-local government travel will also be fully subsidized. He issued a stern warning to operators against any attempts to extort passengers, directing commuters to report violations through designated contact numbers prominently displayed on all vehicles and boats involved in the program.
Administration's Economic and Logistical Support
Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, the Coordinator of the program and Special Adviser on General Duties, explained that this intervention reflects the administration's dedication to alleviating economic hardships, especially during festive seasons. Akiba pointed out the critical role of the transport sector in the economy, noting its substantial contribution to national output, and added that the initiative is expected to generate a multiplier effect benefiting both operators and commuters alike. He further disclosed that robust monitoring mechanisms have been established to ensure strict compliance and prevent any potential abuse of the scheme.

Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, appealed to residents to protect public infrastructure and maintain support for government policies. Special Adviser on Transport, Okon Ephraim, detailed that participating drivers have been exempted from tolls and provided with stipends and allowances to sustain their operations during this period. He specified that approximately 55 buses have been deployed within the Calabar metropolis, operating daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with no identification required from commuters beyond maintaining orderly conduct.

Henshaw Nta, Chairman of the Unified Drivers' Association, praised the initiative, describing it as a clear indication of a people-focused administration, particularly in the context of ongoing road repairs and enhancements in traffic management.
