In a significant show of solidarity, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, led a high-level delegation to Bayelsa State on a condolence visit following the passing of Bayelsa's Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
A Visit of Solidarity and Shared Grief
Governor Fubara met with his Bayelsa counterpart, Governor Douye Diri, at the Government House in Yenagoa on December 21, 2025. Fubara expressed the profound grief felt by the people of Rivers State, emphasizing the inseparable link between the two sister states. He stated that the loss deeply impacts Rivers as well, noting that whatever affects Bayelsa creates a ripple effect in his state.
"Rivers and Bayelsa will always remain as one people," Governor Fubara declared. "While you, in Bayelsa, are grieving, our state is also grieving. Our story in Rivers cannot be complete without some aspects of Bayelsa. Therefore, in situations like this, when Bayelsa mourns, it is only proper for us to come and condole with the government, the people, and the family of the late deputy governor."
Words of Comfort and a Pledge of Support
Fubara offered assurances of support to the government and people of Bayelsa during this difficult period. He acknowledged the limitations of words in the face of such a loss, pointing to faith as the ultimate solace. "We assure you that we will support you," he said. "There is no condolence visit or sweet words that can fill the gap of the loss of any dear one. It is only God that can fill the void."
In his response, Governor Douye Diri expressed heartfelt gratitude for the visit. He revealed that Fubara was the first state governor to pay a condolence visit after the deputy governor's demise on December 11, 2025. Diri described the gesture as a powerful demonstration of the common history and unity shared by the people of Bayelsa and Rivers.
Honouring the Memory and Strengthening Ties
Governor Diri stated that the government and people of Bayelsa, alongside the Ewhrudjakpo family, were deeply comforted and honoured by Governor Fubara's presence. He used the occasion to reaffirm the commitment to continued collaboration between the two states. Diri assured that Bayelsa and Rivers would keep working together to resolve any issues amicably, always prioritizing the mutual interests of their people.
Following their meeting at the Government House, the two governors proceeded to the official residence of the late deputy governor. There, they personally consoled his widow, Mrs. Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, offering their sympathies and support directly to the bereaved family.
