Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule Reveals Pressure to Run for Senate in 2027
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has publicly declared that he is facing significant pressure from various stakeholders to contest for the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The governor made this revelation during a meeting with state executive council members at his country home in Akwanga Local Government Area on Saturday, March 21.
Governor's Disclosure and Stakeholder Pressure
Governor Sule explained that he has been receiving persistent calls from political leaders, traditional rulers, and senior politicians from the Nasarawa North senatorial district urging him to seek the senatorial position. The governor emphasized that these stakeholders are advocating for quality representation for the region, which has influenced his consideration of the political move.
"With all the pressure coming from our leaders, and so I don't want them to feel offended that I have not been responding, I promise them I will contest when the time comes," Governor Sule stated during the gathering.
The governor further disclosed that he had initially planned to support another candidate for the position but changed his mind when that individual joined the chorus of voices encouraging him to run. Governor Sule confirmed he is currently consulting with various stakeholders before making a final decision about his political future.
Mixed Reactions from Citizens and Political Observers
The governor's announcement has generated diverse reactions from residents of Nasarawa State and political analysts across Nigeria. Many have taken to social media platforms to express their opinions about the governor's claim of being under pressure to contest the senatorial seat.
Mohammed Zakariyau questioned the validity of the pressure narrative, stating: "You are interested in going and nothing else because that's your sole choice, nobody can decide your future for you, and therefore, the issue of 'under pressure from certain quarters is immaterial here.'"
Cos Mafuyai expressed concerns about performance, noting: "People who are pressured don't perform once elected, but people who nurse the ambition into elective office and work hard to win do."
Bem Haanya warned about potential political betrayal, referencing similar situations: "Na so dem mount pressure on Darius Dickson Ishaku o. Groups from Southern Taraba were flocking to Government House, Jalingo, to persuade him to contest for the senatorial seat, yet on election day, they abandoned him."
Emmanuel Yohanna Allu directly challenged the governor's terminology: "If you want to contest, no one is stopping you, but don't use the word pressure. If I may ask, who is pressuring you?"
Longji Goro Job offered a cynical perspective: "One or two clowns that they normally give pocket money will tell them, 'Oga, why not go for senate,' and they will say under pressure."
Political Context and Background
Governor Abdullahi Sule's political future has become a subject of intense speculation as the 2027 elections approach. The Nasarawa North senatorial district represents a significant political battleground, and the governor's potential candidacy could reshape the political landscape in the state.
This development comes amid broader political discussions in Nigeria, with various governors and political figures positioning themselves for future electoral contests. Governor Sule's disclosure highlights the complex dynamics of political succession and representation in Nigeria's democratic system.
The governor, who previously dismissed concerns about impeachment proceedings in Rivers State, emphasized that legal processes govern political discussions in Nigeria. His current focus on potential senatorial ambitions reflects the ongoing political calculations happening across Nigerian states as the country moves toward another election cycle.
