Insecurity is a menace that shows no respect for ethnicity or creed. It attacks suddenly and viciously, leaving communities across villages and cities in despair. This harsh truth was the central message of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State during a pivotal event held on Sunday, 6 December 2025. The state government organized a special prayer session, marking a decisive turn from anxiety to active response in the face of mounting security threats.
A Leadership Committed to Action and Unity
Governor Yusuf declared that the time for silent suffering is over. Faced with violent crime and instability, his administration has chosen a path of unwavering resolve. He emphasized that unity is now a critical necessity for survival, not just a popular slogan. The governor assured that his government would provide steadfast support to all parties involved in securing the state, including traditional rulers, security agencies, community leaders, and ordinary citizens. He stressed that protecting Kano is a shared mission that requires everyone's participation.
From Promises to Tangible Security Measures
The government's strategy moves beyond powerful speeches to concrete action. A key focus has been boosting the operational power of security forces by supplying essential logistics. Authorities have deployed numerous patrol vehicles and motorcycles to improve mobility and enable faster responses, especially in remote areas where criminals take advantage of poor access.
Looking forward, the administration has promised to integrate modern surveillance technologies into security operations. This shift towards intelligence-driven tactics aims to identify and eliminate threats before they can cause widespread fear, acknowledging that old methods are insufficient for modern challenges.
Spiritual Fortification and Community Mobilization
Recognizing that security is not achieved by force alone, Kano has also harnessed spiritual strength. The government mobilized over four thousand Qur'anic reciters from across all 44 local government areas of the state to offer prayers for divine intervention and peace. This gathering was a profound display of collective hope and moral determination.
The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Dr Muhammadu Sunusi II, praised the initiative as timely. He highlighted the need to combine prayer with practical preparedness, urging citizens to support government efforts and security agencies. He warned that silence and apathy only empower criminals. Other respected religious leaders like Sheikh Karibullah Nasir Kabara and Sheikh Tijjani Bala Kalarawi echoed this call for renewed patriotism and active community involvement in safeguarding society.
On-the-Ground Assurance and Federal Collaboration
The government's determination was further demonstrated during a visit by Governor Yusuf to Faruwa village in Shanono Local Government Area. He was accompanied by heads of major security agencies, including the Army, Police, DSS, and Civil Defence, sending a strong signal of seriousness. The governor assured residents that protecting lives and property is a non-negotiable priority and that all necessary equipment would be deployed to restore stability.
He called on communities in Shanono, Tsanyawa, Bagwai, Ghari, and other affected areas to provide credible intelligence on criminal movements, reinforcing that community cooperation is a powerful weapon. Governor Yusuf also revealed that he has discussed the security situation with the President, and there is a shared commitment to a decisive resolution, including the deployment of more modern devices and the rescue of all captives.
Kano's comprehensive approach stands out for its balance: faith and force, community participation and government authority, tradition and technology. It understands that true security means more than just stopping violence; it requires justice, vigilance, unity, and a common purpose. At a time when many states are searching for solutions, Kano has chosen action over excuses and unity over division. The political will on display serves as a reminder that determined leadership can inspire public confidence. This strategy, worthy of study by other states, proves that defeating insecurity demands a society that speaks, thinks, and acts as one. With prayer, technology, unity, and resolve, Kano is rewriting its security narrative from one of despair to one of determined hope.
