In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has presented his eldest son, Mustapha Kwankwaso, as the running mate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State. The announcement was made by Habibu Mohammad, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, who confirmed that Mustapha was officially unveiled on Monday to run alongside Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, a close associate of the former governor.
Political Realignment and Resignations
Mustapha Kwankwaso previously served as the Commissioner for Youths and Sports in the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf. He resigned from his position, along with three other commissioners, following a political realignment that saw Governor Yusuf defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Similarly, Aminu Gwarzo stepped down as deputy governor amid impeachment pressure from the state House of Assembly. Gwarzo, however, maintained that his resignation was due to personal reasons.
Kwankwasiyya Movement's Strategy
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, under the leadership of Senator Kwankwaso, has vowed to reclaim power from the APC in Kano State. The movement views the defection of Governor Yusuf to the APC as a betrayal and is determined to field a strong candidate to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming election. The selection of Mustapha Kwankwaso is seen as a strategic move to consolidate support within the Kwankwasiyya political structure and leverage the family's political influence in the state.
Political analysts believe that the father-son ticket could energize the NDC's base and attract voters who remain loyal to the Kwankwaso political dynasty. However, the move also raises questions about nepotism and the role of family dynasties in Nigerian politics. As the 2027 election approaches, the political landscape in Kano State is expected to witness intense competition between the NDC, APC, and other parties.
