Oyo Governor Announces N10,000 Monthly Salary Boost for Workers
In a significant move to alleviate economic pressures, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that all employees under the state government will receive an additional N10,000 in their monthly salaries for the next three months. This initiative is specifically designed to help workers cope with the recent surge in fuel prices, which has increased transportation and living costs across Nigeria.
Implementation Details and Governor's Statement
Governor Makinde made this announcement during a public event held in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday. He emphasized that the salary top-up will commence in April and apply uniformly to all workers, including those in local government areas. The governor indicated that this support measure could be extended beyond the initial three-month period if the economic situation does not show improvement.
"I am pleased to announce that starting from April, all workers in Oyo State and local government will receive N10,000 as petrol and transportation support in addition to their regular monthly salary," Makinde stated. "This applies to everyone as a flat rate. We may consider extending it depending on circumstances. Even those not directly employed by the state government might benefit as we work to make this initiative inclusive."
The governor added that as his administration approaches its conclusion, ensuring continuity of such welfare programs remains a priority focus area for his government.
Political Context and 2027 Election Preparations
This announcement comes amid heightened political activities as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. Governor Makinde, along with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, recently held meetings with key political figures including Senator Seriake Dickson and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
These meetings occurred against a backdrop of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the PDP, which has experienced internal divisions over the past year. The party has essentially split into two factions: one supported by Minister Nyesom Wike and another backed by governors including Makinde.
Following a meeting in Kano that also included Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, sources close to Kwankwaso suggested that despite being framed as part of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the discussions likely involved early planning for the 2027 presidential race.
Internal Party Dynamics and Accusations
The political landscape within the PDP remains contentious. Jungudo Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary for the Wike-backed faction, recently accused the governors' faction of attempting to disrupt the party's upcoming national convention scheduled for March 29-30.
In response, Ini Ememobong, speaking for the faction supported by governors, dismissed these allegations as character assassination attempts. He maintained that their group remains committed to party reconciliation and unity.
Despite these internal challenges, the governors' faction proceeded with a convention in Ibadan on November 16, where Tanimu Turaki and other officials were elected to the National Working Committee, demonstrating their continued organizational activities within the party structure.
