Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has sparked a significant conversation on governance priorities after presenting a fleet of 65 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across the state. The event, held on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, at the Government House in Asaba, was described by the governor as a strategic move to bolster community-level administration.
A Strategic Gesture for Grassroots Leaders
Governor Oborevwori framed the presentation as a critical investment in the traditional institution, which he labeled an underappreciated layer of leadership. A total of 60 Toyota Prado SUVs and five Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles were handed over to royal fathers from various communities. The governor emphasized that these vehicles were not mere gifts but essential "tools of service" designed to enhance the monarchs' capacity to maintain peace and stability.
"They are not merely custodians of our customs, norms and traditions; they are vital intermediaries between government and the people at the grassroots," Oborevwori stated. He highlighted their voluntary roles in community mobilization, dispute resolution, and collaboration with security agencies, often undertaken in difficult terrains without material compensation. The choice of rugged SUVs, he noted, was deliberate to match the challenging rural environments many of the rulers operate within.
Mixed Reactions from Deltans
However, the grand gesture has been met with swift criticism from many residents of Delta State. Against a backdrop of prevailing economic pressures, rising living costs, and security challenges, Deltans have questioned the timing and scale of this intervention. Critics argue that allocating such high-value resources to unelected officials deepens perceptions of elite privilege and misaligned public spending.
The central concern raised is whether these funds could have been better deployed to address pressing issues like:
- Providing enhanced security across the state.
- Addressing critical infrastructure deficits.
- Alleviating the economic hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
This public debate underscores a tension between symbolic support for traditional institutions and the urgent, tangible needs of the populace.
Royal Fathers Express Gratitude
In contrast to the public criticism, the beneficiary monarchs expressed profound appreciation for the governor's support. Speaking at the ceremony, prominent rulers including the Obi of Owa, HRM Dr Emmanuel Efeizomor (JP); the Ovie of Uvwie, HRM Emmanuel Sideso Abe I; and the Pere of Ogulagha, HRM Elder Capt King Joseph I. Timiyan (JP), described the vehicles as a major boost to their operational efficiency and effectiveness.
The Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers, the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), Orhue I, gave the vote of thanks. He characterized the presentation as a timely and symbolic intervention that would undoubtedly strengthen grassroots governance and peace-building efforts throughout Delta State.
The event has firmly placed the relationship between state governments and traditional institutions, as well as the optics of public expenditure, under intense scrutiny.
