Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has called on the people of Ekiti State and Nigerians at large to maintain their belief in democracy as a platform to enhance their involvement in governance as patriotic citizens.
Reflection on Democracy Day
Oyebanji emphasized that Democracy Day provides a chance for thoughtful reflection on the progress achieved and to strengthen the commitment to sustaining democratic principles, aiming for a stronger state and a prosperous nation.
In a statement marking Democracy Day, signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, the Governor noted that June 12 represents a pivotal moment in the nation's political history and its challenging democratic journey.
Commemorating the 1993 Election
He explained that this day is set aside to honor the 33rd anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest, fairest, and most peaceful national election in Nigeria's history, won by the late business magnate, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The Ekiti Governor paid tribute to the symbol of June 12, Chief Abiola; his wife, the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola; and other heroes and heroines of democracy who made the ultimate sacrifice for Nigerians to enjoy freedom from military rule.
Honoring Pro-Democracy Patriots
Oyebanji also honored other pro-democracy activists who fought for the validation of June 12 and witnessed the beginning of democracy in 1999, notably President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as a pillar of the democratic struggle. He also acknowledged the nation's immediate past President, the late Muhammadu Buhari, who officially recognized June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria.
Oyebanji recalled that June 12 symbolized the people's readiness to set aside ethnic, religious, linguistic, and cultural differences to establish a democracy where their freedom of choice and the sanctity of the ballot are respected, regardless of challenges.
Democracy as the Best Form of Government
While acknowledging that democracy may not be entirely perfect, Governor Oyebanji maintained that it remains the best form of government, offering every citizen opportunities to contribute to decision-making and have a say in choosing their leaders.
Oyebanji stated that every Nigerian has a role in strengthening the nation's democracy, adhering to constitutionalism and the rule of law, and building stronger institutions to ensure good governance thrives for the benefit of the country and its people.
He congratulated Nigerians and the people of Ekiti State for witnessing this year's Democracy Day and 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the longest in the nation's political history.
