The Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has officially declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the Islamic Hijri New Year (1448 AH). The announcement was made in a press release signed by the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade.
Recognition of Islamic Heritage
According to reports from The Punch, the declaration underscores the administration's respect for the Muslim community and the significance of the Hijri calendar. The Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, a pivotal event in Islamic history.
Oyelade stated: "The Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, and is considered a significant event in Islamic history. As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state."
Call for Unity and Reflection
The government urged residents to use the holiday for prayer, reflection, and community bonding. Oyelade emphasized: "The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation."
Residents are encouraged to embrace the values of peace, unity, and multiculturalism that the Hijri New Year represents.
Similar Declaration in Borno State
In a parallel move, the Borno State Government under Governor Babagana Zulum also declared June 16, 2026, a public holiday for the same occasion. The announcement was made by Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, who called on citizens to rededicate themselves to peaceful coexistence and service to humanity.
The statement read: "This is to inform the general public that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has declared Tuesday, 1st Day of Muharram 1448 After Hijri (AH), which is equivalent to Tuesday, 16th June 2026, as a Public Holiday to commemorate the first day of the Islamic Calendar Year 1448 (AH)."
Sultan's Directive on Moon Sighting
Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, called on Muslims nationwide to participate in the sighting of the new moon of Muharram 1448 AH, which determines the start of the Hijri year. The directive was issued through a statement by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.
These declarations reflect the importance of the Islamic calendar in Nigeria and the commitment of state governments to foster religious tolerance and unity.
