Sokoto State Government Approves Early Salary Disbursement for Eid-al-Fitr 2026
In a move aimed at facilitating the observance of the upcoming Eid-al-Fitr festival, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has sanctioned the immediate payment of March salaries to civil servants. The announcement, made public on Friday, March 13, 2026, ensures that state employees can celebrate the religious holiday without financial constraints.
Details of the Salary Approval
According to a statement released by Abubakar Bawa, the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Sokoto, the early payment covers a broad spectrum of workers. This includes employees in the Local Government Councils, the State Civil Service, and the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), as well as pensioners across the state. The initiative is part of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government's efforts to support public servants during significant cultural and religious events.
Governor Aliyu emphasized the importance of this gesture, urging civil servants to reciprocate by maintaining dedication and commitment to their duties. He stated, "We expect our civil servants to be punctual, hardworking, committed, and above all, sincere in the discharge of their responsibilities." Additionally, he called on workers to continue supporting the administration's Nine-Point Smart Innovative Agenda, which aims to fulfill campaign promises and drive development in Sokoto State.
Eid-al-Fitr 2026 Date and Religious Context
Eid-al-Fitr, known as the 'Festival of Breaking the Fast,' marks the end of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting for Muslims worldwide. For 2026, prominent clerics have provided insights into the expected date. Sheikh Yunus Teliat, the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland in Oyo State, indicated that Eid-al-Fitr will likely fall on either Thursday, March 19, or Friday, March 20. He advised Nigerian Muslims to follow official announcements from Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
Further details on the Shawwal crescent, which signals the end of Ramadan, were shared by Umar Jubril Simwal, a member of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC). He noted that the new moon conjunction is predicted for Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 2:23 AM, with moon sighting activities considered an act of worship. This aligns with traditional practices where Muslims await confirmation from religious authorities before celebrating.
Broader Implications and Similar Initiatives
This early salary payment in Sokoto reflects a growing trend among Nigerian state governments to prioritize worker welfare during festive periods. For instance, earlier reports highlighted that Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, also approved early March salaries for civil servants to aid in Eid-al-Fitr preparations. Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, the acting head of service in Kano, described this as a demonstration of the administration's commitment to employee well-being and appreciation for their contributions to state development.
Governor Aliyu expressed gratitude to the people of Sokoto for their ongoing support, prayers, and goodwill towards his administration. He reiterated that such initiatives are integral to fostering a harmonious and productive public service environment, ultimately benefiting the state's socio-economic landscape.
