In a decisive move to address escalating violence, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has officially designated Karim-Lamido Local Government Area as a Special Area of Security Concern. The declaration was made on Friday through Executive Order No. 1 of 2026, signaling a major shift in the state's security strategy for the troubled region.
Why Karim-Lamido Faces a Special Security Status
The governor's order, issued from the state capital Jalingo, comes after persistent and worsening insecurity in Karim-Lamido. Government assessments cited repeated communal clashes, banditry attacks, and violent conflicts between farmers and herders as the primary reasons for the drastic measure.
This area has endured prolonged security challenges, including attacks on civilians and security forces, widespread destruction of farmlands and property, and the displacement of numerous residents. The situation reached a critical point in 2025 when renewed violence led to several fatalities, including soldiers deployed to restore order.
Enhanced Security Measures and Peacebuilding Efforts
With this new designation, the state government is now empowered to implement a raft of enhanced security protocols. These include the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to identified flashpoints within the local government.
Furthermore, the administration will oversee the registration and coordination of community vigilante groups, hunters, and local defence outfits under the supervision of the Taraba State Marshals Security Guard. This aims to bring all local security efforts under a unified command structure.
Beyond boots on the ground, Governor Kefas is pursuing a multi-faceted approach. He has intensified high-level security meetings with stakeholders to tackle root causes like unemployment, land disputes, and intercommunal tensions.
Judicial Inquiry and Long-Term Solutions
In a significant step towards accountability and reconciliation, the governor has established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry. This body is tasked with investigating the deep-seated causes of the Karim-Lamido crisis, including allegations of instigation, property destruction, and loss of lives.
The commission is expected to produce recommendations focused on accountability, reconciliation, and sustainable peacebuilding. Complementing this, the state has set up committees on land use and conflict prevention to directly address the recurring land disputes that often spark violence.
Governor Kefas has issued a stern warning, stating that acts of violence will not be tolerated. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, comply with lawful measures, and actively participate in community peace initiatives.
This declaration, which combines security enforcement with legal and social interventions, is anticipated to draw increased attention and resources to Karim-Lamido. The ultimate goal is to restore lasting stability and enable displaced persons to return safely to their homes and livelihoods.
