Two members of the House of Representatives have formally left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join opposition parties, the latest fallout from the party's primary elections. Abubakar Baba Zango, representing Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency in Adamawa State, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Rabilu Bala, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs from Bauchi State, joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Defections Announced During Plenary
The defections were announced during plenary on Tuesday, presided over by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen. The Speaker read separate letters from the lawmakers, who cited political developments and the approval of their constituents as reasons for their decisions. Zango noted that developments within the APC in his constituency made it difficult to pursue his political aspirations within the party. Bala stated that his move to the PRP was motivated by the need to continue his political journey on a platform that aligns with his constituents’ interests.
Speaker Acknowledges Decisions
Following the announcements, Speaker Tajudeen acknowledged the lawmakers' decisions and wished them success in their new political parties. The defections highlight growing tensions and realignments within the APC following its primary elections, as aggrieved aspirants and elected officials reassess their political future ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Political Implications
Political observers believe these exits could signal further movement across party lines in the coming weeks, as dissatisfied party members weigh their options after the contentious APC primaries. The ruling party now faces the challenge of retaining its members amid internal disputes.
