Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has presented a substantial financial donation of N600 million to support the families of security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as other victims of insecurity in the state.
A Solemn Tribute at Armed Forces Remembrance Day
The governor made the donation on Thursday, 15th January 2026, at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri. The event was part of the activities marking the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. Governor Uzodimma praised the ultimate sacrifice made by the fallen heroes, expressing regret over the losses suffered due to insecurity. He noted with satisfaction, however, that the security situation in Imo has significantly improved, with the previous menace now largely curtailed.
Thanksgiving Service Highlights Achievements and Gratitude
In a related development, Governor Uzodimma attributed his administration's accomplishments over the past six years to divine guidance. He made this declaration during a thanksgiving service held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri to mark his sixth anniversary in office. The governor extended his appreciation to religious leaders, community leaders, stakeholders, security agencies, and law-abiding citizens of Imo State for their unwavering prayers and support, which he said were crucial to restoring peace and stability.
He acknowledged the profound symbolism of having taken his oath of office on the same day as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, using the occasion to pay glowing tribute to security personnel for their selfless service. Uzodimma assured residents that the period of severe challenges is over, emphasizing that the state is now on a progressive path, and he urged for continued support from the populace.
Religious Leaders Laud Governance and Raise Concerns
Officiating the thanksgiving mass, the Bishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Dr. Lucius Ugorji, commended the state government for notable achievements in several sectors. He specifically highlighted:
- Extensive road construction projects
- Development of social infrastructure
- The successful Skill Up programme

Archbishop Ugorji also acknowledged the improved security climate, reflected in the peaceful celebration of the recent Christmas and New Year festivities. However, he strongly condemned the recent discovery of an illegal morgue in Ngor Okpala, urging authorities to ensure such an incident does not happen again. He also joined in paying tribute to fallen heroes across Nigeria.
In a significant gesture, the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), led by its Chairman, Rt. Rev. David Onuoha, presented Governor Uzodimma with an award tagged “Doyin of Ecumenism.” The council praised the governor for his consistent support to the church and his positive impact on the lives of Imo people.
