Zamfara Implements Robust Security Plan for Eid-el-Fitr Celebrations
In a decisive move to ensure public safety, the Zamfara State government has convened a high-level security meeting with heads of security and paramilitary agencies. The session, chaired by Secretary to the State Government Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada in Gusau, focused on reviewing the state's security landscape and formulating proactive strategies ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr festivities.
Comprehensive Security Deployment Announced
During the strategic engagement, security agencies provided detailed briefings on their preparations, which include the massive deployment of approximately 1,474 personnel. This force comprises police officers, civil defence corps members, intelligence operatives, road safety officials, and specialized explosive ordnance disposal teams tasked with handling potential bomb and explosive threats. The comprehensive deployment aims to cover all critical areas before, during, and after the Sallah celebrations.
Nakwada emphasized that the meeting was initiated at the directive of Governor Dauda Lawal to assess current security trends and verify the readiness of measures to protect residents. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, stating that safeguarding lives and property is a collective responsibility requiring unified effort. Additionally, he called on traditional and religious leaders, particularly Chief Imams, to intensify sermons promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.
Kano State Suspends Traditional Durbar Festival
In a contrasting development, the Kano State government has announced the suspension of the Sallah Durbar, a cherished traditional horse-ride festival, to prevent any breakdown of law and order. This decision follows the release of guidelines for a parallel Durbar event by the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from his Nasarawa mini palace, while the 16th Emir, Dr Muhammadu Sanusi II, has yet to disclose details for the Kofar-Kudu Sallah Durbar.
Intelligence-Driven Decision and Modified Events
Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya explained in a statement that the suspension is based on credible intelligence indicating possible security threats during Eid-el-Fitr. The affected activities include 'Hawan Daushe', the vibrant traditional horse possession at the emir's palace, as well as 'Hawan Fanisau' and 'Hauwan Dorayi', which involve the emir's horse rides to various city locations.
However, the government has approved modifications for two events: 'Hauwa Idi' and 'Hauwan Nassarawa'. Under the new arrangements, Emir Sanusi II will conduct Hawan Idi, proceeding from the praying ground through designated routes to Gidan Shettima, concluding at Kofar Fatalwa of the Kano Emir's palace. Additionally, the traditional homage (Hauwa Nasarawa) will be hosted, during which Sanusi will be received by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House on the third day of Sallah.
Waiya noted that this final position resulted from extensive consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and other key stakeholders, balancing cultural traditions with security imperatives.
