Women's Advocacy Groups Decry Assault at Delta Festival, Call for Comprehensive Justice

In a strong condemnation of recent events, women's advocacy organizations have spoken out against the assault on women during a festival in Delta State, labeling the incident as a severe breach of human rights and an act of criminality masquerading as cultural tradition.

BPW Nigeria Denounces the Incident

The Nigeria Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW) has issued a statement expressing outrage over reports that women were subjected to forceful assault, stripping, and violation in broad daylight at the festival. The group emphasized that such actions cannot be justified under any cultural or traditional practice, describing them as a gross violation of human dignity.

While acknowledging the swift response from the Delta State Police Command, which led to the arrest of the alleged organizer and other suspects, BPW Nigeria insisted that arrests alone are insufficient. The group called for a thorough investigation and transparent prosecution to ensure that justice is fully served and to deter future occurrences.

WARDC Highlights Need for Systemic Reforms

Dr. Princess Olufemi-Kayode, the Acting Executive Director of the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), also addressed the issue, noting that while law enforcement authorities responded quickly to the assault in Ozoro, the overall response remains inadequate without comprehensive prosecution and systemic reforms.

Speaking to journalists, Olufemi-Kayode acknowledged the prompt action by the Delta State Police Command, which resulted in the arrest of key suspects, including the alleged chief organizer and a community leader. She highlighted that the use of video evidence and intelligence gathering has led to the detention of approximately 16 individuals so far.

However, she stressed that arrests do not equate to justice. "The police response has been swift but incomplete. The real test lies in whether the suspects will be properly investigated, charged under the full weight of the law, and successfully prosecuted, rather than the case fading away after public outrage subsides," she stated.

Broader Implications and Calls for Action

Both groups underscored the importance of addressing such incidents not only through legal means but also by challenging harmful cultural norms that perpetuate violence against women. They urged for increased awareness and education to prevent similar assaults in the future.

The advocacy efforts aim to ensure that victims receive support and that perpetrators are held accountable, fostering a safer environment for women in Delta State and beyond.
