Amen Okorocha, the second son of former Imo State Governor Senator Rochas Okorocha, chose to mark his birthday in a profoundly impactful way over the weekend. He celebrated with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and individuals with disabilities at the New Karamajiji community in Abuja, bringing joy and essential support to hundreds of vulnerable residents.
A Celebration of Empowerment and Generosity
The event, organized by the Rochas Foundation in partnership with the Juremi Foundation, went beyond a simple birthday party. Amen explained that his connection to the Karamajiji community is not new, stating they have had a relationship for about seven years. However, this visit was particularly special as he decided to share his celebration with what he called his family—the physically challenged and less privileged.
During the outreach, the team distributed various empowerment items, including bikes, sewing machines, and cash prizes. Amen emphasized that the focus was on providing tools for sustainable livelihood, not just temporary relief. "We brought equipment that could help them start a business, not just food that will be finished today," he remarked.
Community Spirit and Heartfelt Reactions
The level of need witnessed was more than Amen anticipated, including cases of burn victims. A deeply moving moment occurred when, after the foundation donated N1 million, members of the community themselves began contributing additional funds, giving N500 and N200. "That is what Nigeria is about. That is the love we grew up with. It excited me deeply," Amen expressed, surprised by the reciprocal generosity.
Mohammed Dantile, the Secretary to Persons with Disabilities in the FCT communities, gave a heartfelt appreciation speech. He thanked the Rochas Foundation for its long-standing support, noting that their relationship spans almost 20 years. Dantile highlighted the tangible impact of the foundation's skills acquisition centre, which has trained residents in:
- Television repairs
- Computer studies
- Music
- Shoemaking
- Welding
"So far, we have graduated about 250 persons with disabilities and empowered them," Dantile said, acknowledging that NGOs like the Rochas Foundation have often provided more support than the government, though he also noted assistance from the wife of the President.
A Mother's Pride and a Call for More Support
Nkechi Okorocha, wife of the former governor, was present and beamed with pride over her son's actions. She described Amen as "a son with a very large heart" who grew up in an environment where giving was a way of life. "I am excited that he chose to celebrate his birthday with the less privileged, people who had forgotten how to smile," she said.
She used the opportunity to call on the government, other NGOs, and individuals to intensify their efforts in supporting vulnerable people across Nigeria. "Even the smallest support can change someone’s life," she added, encouraging everyone to show love and create time for others.
The event, held on November 22, 2025, successfully blended celebration with meaningful humanitarian action, leaving a lasting impression of hope and community solidarity in the Karamajiji area.
