The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed its strong dedication to fighting sexual assault and gender-based violence through the establishment of a comprehensive Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at Kind Fahad Women and Children's Hospital.
New Hope for Survivors
Dr. Aisha MZ Anka, Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Development Affairs, emphasized the state government's commitment to ensuring the effective operation and long-term sustainability of the newly inaugurated facility. The centre, which began operations on Tuesday, represents a significant step forward in providing holistic support for survivors of sexual violence.
The facility has been named after Zamfara's First Lady, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, in recognition of her unwavering efforts toward protecting the dignity and well-being of women and children across the state.
Comprehensive Support System
According to Dr. Anka, the centre is equipped with modern medical, forensic, and case-management tools sourced both within Nigeria and internationally. This advanced equipment will ensure that survivors receive comprehensive care that meets global standards.
"Under Governor Dauda Lawal's leadership, the state continues to take bold strategic steps toward strengthening justice systems, expanding healthcare access, and ensuring holistic support for survivors of gender based violence," the commissioner stated during the commissioning ceremony.
The state government has implemented educational enlightenment programs aimed at minimizing sexual assault incidents and combating the harmful effects of gender-based violence in communities.
Strategic Partnerships
Dr. Anka expressed sincere appreciation to UNICEF Nigeria for their steadfast partnership and humanitarian investments. She specifically acknowledged UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Mrs. Wafaa Saeed, and UNICEF Chief of Sokoto Field Office, Mr. Michael Juma, for their commitment to strengthening protection systems in Zamfara State.
"Your presence today reflects UNICEF's deep commitment to strengthening protection systems and supporting survivor-centred services in Zamfara State," she noted.
The commissioner confirmed that her ministry will continue working closely with the office of the first lady, UNICEF, and all partners to eliminate sexual assault and gender-based violence throughout the state.
Governor's International Recognition
In a separate development, Governor Dauda Lawal has been selected to accompany President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the 20th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in South Africa.
The summit, scheduled for November 22 and 23, will include six Nigerian governors as part of the President's delegation. According to a statement by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, all G20 member states will be represented at the gathering.
