Governor Bago Reveals 500,000 Residents Displaced by Insecurity in Niger State
Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago of Niger State has made a startling disclosure, revealing that no fewer than 500,000 residents have been forced out of their communities due to escalating terrorist activities. The governor stated that these displaced persons are now scattered across various neighboring states and even beyond Nigeria's borders.
Widespread Displacement Across Regions
According to Governor Bago, the displaced residents from Niger State have found refuge in multiple locations including Kebbi State, Kwara State, Kogi State, Kaduna State, and the Federal Capital Territory. Additionally, many have crossed international borders into the neighboring Benin Republic, highlighting the severe scale of the humanitarian crisis.
The governor made these revelations during the Presidential Initiative event focused on distributing food, nutritional items, and drugs to vulnerable persons affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Borgu Local Government Area. This initiative represents a critical response to the dire situation facing thousands of families who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
Government Efforts for Reunification
Governor Bago assured affected residents that concerted efforts are underway to facilitate their return to their communities as soon as possible. He explained that the state government, in collaboration with the federal government and various development partners, is working tirelessly to accelerate the reunification of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Borgu with their families.
"We are working round the clock to ensure that our displaced brothers and sisters can return to their homes safely," Governor Bago emphasized during his address at the distribution event.
Presidential Directive for Security Enhancement
The governor further revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued specific directives to address the security challenges in the region. According to Governor Bago, the President has ordered the clearing and making habitable of the National Park in Borgu, which has become a haven for criminal elements.
The comprehensive plan also includes establishing permanent bases for security agencies in the area to combat the growing insecurity. These measures aim to create a safer environment that would enable displaced residents to return to their communities with confidence in their security.
Appeal for Patience and Understanding
Governor Bago appealed for patience and understanding from the residents of Borgu, noting that the federal government's intervention through the provision of essential food items demonstrates genuine concern for those displaced by the crisis. He emphasized that both state and federal authorities are committed to resolving the security challenges that have uprooted hundreds of thousands of people.
Royal and Governmental Support
The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, commended Governor Bago for what he described as tireless efforts to improve security and support residents affected by the crisis. The traditional ruler acknowledged the efforts of both state and federal governments and urged the people of Borgu to remain patient, assuring them that authorities at all levels are working diligently to restore peace and safety in the area.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, expressed gratitude to the federal government for its support to the people of Borgu and praised Governor Bago's efforts to restore peace in the emirate. Other officials including the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area, Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, and the Jikadan Borgu all commended the intervention by both governments.
Symbolic Distribution and Future Hope
The highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of food items to selected beneficiaries drawn from communities across Borgu Kingdom. Officials emphasized that this assistance would significantly ease the hardship faced by residents who have lost their homes and sources of livelihood due to the persistent insecurity.
