Nigerian Army Conducts Major Operation Against Bandits in Zamfara State
In a significant security development, troops of the Nigerian Army have executed a decisive raid on the camp of a notorious bandit leader in Zamfara State, resulting in the neutralization of 20 terrorists and the destruction of their operational base. The operation, however, came at a heavy cost, with several gallant soldiers losing their lives during the intense confrontation.
Details of the Military Engagement in Maru Local Government Area
Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Sunday, February 1, 2026. According to the military spokesperson, the action was initiated based on credible intelligence reports indicating that over 100 bandits had assembled at the camp to orchestrate large-scale attacks on civilian communities and military supply routes.
The operation targeted the stronghold of Gwaska Dan Karmi, a well-known bandit leader operating in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Following days of meticulous surveillance, ground forces, with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), moved to intercept the militants on January 31, 2026.
Intense Firefight and Strategic Outcomes
A fierce gun battle erupted as the terrorists attempted to employ flanking and encircling maneuvers against the advancing troops. Despite these tactics, the bandits were overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactical coordination of the Nigerian military forces. While many of the militants were eliminated on the spot, others managed to flee the scene with gunshot wounds.
The camp was subsequently set ablaze before the troops withdrew from the area, effectively dismantling the bandits' operational capabilities. In the aftermath, the Nigerian Air Force has been conducting interdiction missions to track down and neutralize the fleeing remnants, while ground troops continue to maintain dominance over the region to prevent any resurgence of criminal activities.
Casualties and Military Resolve
Regrettably, the operation was not without significant losses on the part of the Nigerian Army. Several brave soldiers paid the ultimate price during the fierce encounter, demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of duty. Additionally, one combat enabler vehicle was struck by an enemy Rocket Propelled Gun and caught fire, highlighting the intensity of the confrontation.
In his statement, Lieutenant Colonel Osoba emphasized that the Nigerian Army honours the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers and remains unwavering in its mission to restore peace and security in the region. He further noted that combat efficiency remains high as troops persist in their efforts to dismantle bandit networks and disrupt their supply chains across Northwestern Nigeria.
This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in combating banditry and terrorism in Zamfara State, while also reflecting the military's commitment to proactive and intelligence-driven engagements to protect civilian lives and infrastructure.
