Bandits Burn School in Niger After Collecting N10m Levy

Bandits have set ablaze a primary school in Dekara town, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, after allegedly collecting a N10 million levy from communities in the area. The attack occurred on Wednesday, according to residents who spoke to Daily Trust.

Attack on Central Primary School

The assailants targeted Central Primary School, Dekara, burning it down during the invasion. A resident who requested anonymity said the bandits emerged from the Kainji Lake National Park and stormed the community.

According to the resident, villages and communities in Dekara District had recently raised and paid N10 million demanded by the bandits. The payment was made after the bandits threatened to attack if the levy was not paid. The resident stated, “The bandits imposed a N10 million levy on communities in the district. The money was paid because they threatened to attack us if we failed to comply. But despite receiving the money, they still attacked the district headquarters and burnt down the primary school.”
