Bandits Kill Police Officer and Attack Health Centre in Katsina Community
In a violent incident that has shocked residents, bandits launched a deadly attack on Sayaya village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, resulting in the death of a police officer and widespread destruction. The assailants stormed the community on Sunday, April 5, 2026, targeting a local police station where they killed one officer during the assault.
Extensive Damage and Looting Reported
The bandits did not stop at the police station; they also attacked a Primary Health Care Centre, causing significant damage to the facility. Reports indicate that vehicles were set ablaze, and shops were looted, with the attackers carting away wares and other valuables. This coordinated raid has left the community reeling from both human and material losses.
Residents described the attack as causing immense panic, forcing many to flee for safety as the gunmen operated for hours without interruption. The sudden nature of the assault took the community by surprise, especially since such incidents had subsided following a peace deal previously reached in the area. This breach of the peace has raised concerns about security stability in the region.
Governor Radda's Response and Assessment
In response to the attack, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, visited the affected community to assess the situation firsthand. He inspected the damaged facilities, including the health centre and police station, and commiserated with residents over the losses they endured. Governor Radda expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families during his visit.
The governor also condoled with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and officers of the command over the death of their colleague, emphasizing the state's commitment to supporting law enforcement. To prevent further attacks and restore normalcy, Governor Radda directed the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to the area, underscoring the urgency of bolstering security measures.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of banditry in Katsina State and the need for sustained efforts to protect communities and maintain peace. The state government's swift action aims to reassure residents and deter future violence, but the attack serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by rural areas.
