Bauchi Governor Elated as Armed Forces Crush 20,000 Bandits in Major Security Operation
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has expressed immense satisfaction following a decisive joint security operation that resulted in the elimination of approximately 20,000 bandits across various camps within the state. The governor made this announcement during a press briefing on Monday, after a closed-door meeting with security agencies and key stakeholders, highlighting the successful offensive actions taken against criminal elements.
Coordinated Offensive Leads to Significant Gains
According to Governor Mohammed, soldiers conducted extensive raids on bandit hideouts, particularly in the Dajin Madam forest, where they destroyed critical logistics and infrastructure. He extended commendations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for heeding the concerns of Bauchi residents and authorizing robust measures that neutralized the bandits, many of whom were also operating from the Taraba State Forest.
War planes were deployed to bomb the camps, effectively clearing multiple hideouts and disrupting criminal activities in the forested areas. The operation also targeted and destroyed numerous motorcycles used by the bandits, severely limiting their mobility and operational capabilities. Troops have established a firm presence within the forest to consolidate these gains and prevent any attempts at re-infiltration by fleeing criminals.
Surrender Window and Broader Security Reforms
In an effort to build on recent security successes, Governor Mohammed revealed that a "surrender window" has been opened for bandits operating within and around Bauchi State. He advised them to lay down their arms, emphasizing that this initiative is not an amnesty but a chance for peaceful reintegration under government supervision. Arrangements are being considered to relocate surrendering individuals and their families, with the governor noting that many suspects are not originally from Bauchi.
The operation uncovered large settlements of armed groups, prompting a coordinated response involving ground and aerial actions supported by intelligence. As part of broader security reforms, the governor announced stricter surveillance measures, including:
- Biometric data collection for enhanced monitoring.
- Intelligence-led surveillance in markets, motor parks, and public spaces.
- Strengthening community-based security by recruiting and supporting local vigilante groups to complement formal agencies.

The state government plans to conduct a biometric profiling exercise for residents in vulnerable communities, in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and other federal agencies. This initiative is designed to ensure proper documentation and monitor population movements in high-risk areas, thereby eliminating spaces exploited by criminal elements for establishing camps and launching attacks.
