Bishop Akinlade Tasks Government on Security and Curbing Terrorist Spread

Rt. Rev. Olubunmi Akinlade, the Bishop of the Diocese of Ife in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has commended the federal government for its ongoing steps to curb the excesses of terrorists across the nation. However, he emphasized that much more is expected from authorities to safeguard innocent and unarmed Nigerians from the daring groups that continue to expand their influence.

Call for Action at Media Parley

Bishop Akinlade made this urgent appeal during a media parley held at the Bishop’s Court in Ile-Ife. The event also served to announce the upcoming 3rd session of the 12th Synod of the Diocese of Ife, scheduled for April 25 and 26, 2026. This two-day gathering will conclude with a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Aiyetoro, Ile-Ife, located in Osun State, Nigeria.

Osun State: Peace and Progress Amid Tensions

Commenting on the current situation in Osun state, the cleric noted that the state has generally maintained peace, with the present administration implementing commendable people-oriented projects and programs. He highlighted ongoing efforts such as road construction in numerous towns, including the dualization of roads and construction of over-head bridges. Key projects mentioned include improvements to Mayfair Road, Lagere Road, and Iremo Road, which leads to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, all within the diocese's jurisdiction.

Despite these positive developments, Bishop Akinlade pointed out a degree of tension arising from the impending governorship elections later this year. Political realignments and preparations by various parties are contributing to unease, further exacerbated by issues surrounding the control of local governments.

Appeal for School Renovation and Security Measures

The bishop also appealed to the state government to release St. Philip Primary School in Ayetoro, Ile-Ife, for immediate renovation. The school, taken over by the government years ago, has fallen into a dilapidated state and is nearly collapsing. According to Akinlade, renovating the facility would restore its past glory and provide quality education to children in the community.

On security, he urged politicians to adhere to rules and avoid violence as elections approach, stressing that Osun state's peace must be preserved. He expressed concern over the neighboring state of Kwara grappling with insurgency, warning that Osun cannot afford complacency. Additionally, he highlighted the large influx of individuals into the state for illegal mining activities, some of whom may be criminally minded and could extend their actions beyond mining into broader criminality. He called for efforts to curb this influx and ensure that offenders face the full extent of the law as a deterrent.

Collective Mindset and Democratic Accountability

Bishop Akinlade emphasized that solving Nigeria's problems requires a collective mindset, noting that political leaders must prioritize the nation over personal interests to achieve meaningful progress. He urged Nigerians to stop patronizing politicians with empty promises and instead use their votes to demand accountability and fight for their rights. He concluded that practicing true democracy would lead to a better nation for all.
