Civil Society Group Criticizes Senator Oshiomhole Over Insecurity in Edo North
A civil society organization known as Vanguard for Truth has launched a scathing critique against Senator Adams Oshiomhole, alleging his failure to adequately address the escalating insecurity crisis in Edo North Senatorial District. Led by Dr. Richard Bagudu, the group issued a statement titled “Oshiomhole: The Truth Is Still Putting On Its Shoes,” accusing the former governor of Edo State of neglecting his constituency amidst a surge in kidnapping incidents and a decline in economic activities across local communities.
Escalating Security Threats in Afenmai Land
According to Vanguard for Truth, the security situation in Edo North, particularly in the Afenmai region, has deteriorated significantly. What began as isolated incidents on highways and farmlands has now evolved into brazen attacks on homes and entire communities. This alarming trend has forced numerous residents to abandon farming and other traditional livelihoods, exacerbating economic hardships in the area. The group emphasized that the insecurity is not only a threat to safety but also a major driver of poverty and displacement.
Community-Led Efforts and Alleged Neglect
The group highlighted that community-driven initiatives to combat insecurity, coordinated through the Amalgamated Afemai Forum, have garnered widespread support from various stakeholders. This includes local vigilante groups, security agencies, and indigenous residents who are actively involved in efforts to restore peace. However, Vanguard for Truth alleged that Senator Oshiomhole has consistently failed to provide any financial or logistical support to these grassroots endeavors, despite repeated appeals for assistance. They claim this lack of engagement undermines the effectiveness of local interventions.
Controversy Over Security Summit
In a particularly contentious allegation, the group stated that a recent Edo North Security Summit, originally conceived and organized by the Amalgamated Afemai Forum, was allegedly taken over by Senator Oshiomhole. They assert that the event was relocated to his residence in Iyamho, where he assumed a central role in the proceedings. Vanguard for Truth described this move as a deliberate attempt to undermine community-driven efforts, alleging that the original organizers were sidelined during the summit, which diluted the focus on local security concerns.
National Focus Versus Constituency Needs
Further criticism was directed at Senator Oshiomhole for his perceived prioritization of national issues during debates at the National Assembly, while allegedly ignoring pressing security matters within his constituency. The group pointed to illegal mining activities in parts of Edo North as an example of local problems that require urgent attention but have been overlooked. They argue that this disconnect between national politics and grassroots needs is contributing to the worsening security situation.
Revisiting Past Policies and Advocacy
Vanguard for Truth also revisited Senator Oshiomhole’s historical background, drawing a contrast between his past advocacy as a labour leader and his policies as governor. As the former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, he was known for championing workers’ rights. However, the group claims that during his tenure as governor of Edo State, his administration implemented policies that included the casualisation of labour and retrenchment of workers. This comparison is used to question his commitment to the welfare of his constituents in Edo North.
The allegations by Vanguard for Truth highlight growing frustrations over insecurity in Edo North and call for greater accountability from elected representatives. As the situation continues to evolve, stakeholders are urging for more collaborative and effective strategies to address the security challenges facing the region.
