Suspected bandits have killed nine persons and wounded five others in an attack on Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, in the Gidan Wawo community, Guga Ward.
Details of the Attack
According to sources, the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers, firing indiscriminately to announce their presence. They targeted individuals who attempted to resist or flee. Among the deceased were a pregnant woman and a forest guard personnel.
Peace Deal Breached?
The attack comes shortly after a peace agreement was reached between bandits and frontline council areas, including Bakori. However, local lawmaker Hon. Abdurrahman Kandarawa confirmed that the assailants were not part of the peace deal but came from neighboring Zamfara State.
Kandarawa stated: “They killed nine persons, one of them a vigilante group member who is part of the uniformed Forest Guard personnel. Also killed was a pregnant woman. The victims were buried on May 18, and I was at Gidan Wawo and participated in their burial rites. Those wounded, about four or five of them, were taken to hospital for treatment.”
Community Response
The lawmaker added that the bandits who attacked the community came from Zamfara State. He said, “When they were on their way, we started receiving calls about their movement, but we didn’t know where they were going to attack.” He emphasized that the bandits involved in the peace agreement remain in the area. “The bandits we entered into peace agreement with are still among us. We are still talking to them, and they still come to town to buy and sell. Our prayer is that God will bring to an end this security situation.”
The police command had yet to respond to inquiries about the incident at the time of reporting.
