Deadly Bandit Attack in Kwara Community Leaves Soldiers Dead, Residents Abducted

Residents of the Kemanji community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State are reeling from a devastating overnight attack by armed bandits that resulted in the deaths of several soldiers and the abduction of at least seven residents. The assault, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 20, 2026, has plunged the area into a state of mourning and heightened fear, following a prior threat letter that had been issued to the community.

Chaos and Gunfire in the Dead of Night

The attack reportedly commenced around 3:00 a.m., with gunmen storming the quiet rural settlement under the cover of darkness. They fired sporadically, forcing terrified residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety. A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the harrowing scene: "We started hearing heavy gunshots around 3 a.m. At first, we thought it was a misunderstanding, but it became clear that we were under attack. People were running in all directions. It was terrifying."

This violent incident came just days after suspected terrorists allegedly sent a warning letter to the community, which residents had taken seriously but ultimately could not prevent from materializing into a brutal reality.

Fierce Gun Battle and Heavy Casualties

Security personnel, including soldiers and members of the local vigilante group, engaged the attackers in an intense gun battle that lasted nearly two hours. Another community source recounted the severity of the confrontation: "The soldiers tried their best to defend us. The exchange of gunfire was very heavy. It continued until almost 5 a.m. Sadly, we saw some of the soldiers fall. They fought bravely."

Multiple sources have confirmed that at least five soldiers were killed during the encounter, although official casualty figures have not yet been released. Additionally, a vigilante member was reportedly shot, with his condition remaining unclear at the time of reporting.

Explosive Device and Looting by Assailants

Adding to the brutality of the attack, residents reported that the assailants launched an explosive device at the soldiers' camp shortly after their arrival. A youth leader in the area stated: "They came prepared. Immediately they arrived, they fired something like a bomb into the camp. The explosion shook the entire community. After that, the shooting became even more intense."

There are also unconfirmed reports that the gunmen carted away military patrol vehicles and motorcycles before retreating from the scene, further compounding the losses suffered by security forces.

Community Frustration Over Security Response

A resident expressed deep frustration over the perceived lack of timely reinforcement from nearby military installations: "What is even more painful is that the Kainji Air Force Base and the army barracks in Kainji are not far from here. We expected quicker reinforcement. People are scared and confused."

Pictures from the aftermath of the attack show the lifeless bodies of some of the slain soldiers, highlighting the sheer brutality of the incident and underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the region.
