At least nine farmers have been killed, and several others are missing after bandits launched a deadly attack on farmlands in the Gidan Danjumma community, located in the Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Attack on Farmlands
A resident of the community, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity for security reasons, reported that the gunmen had previously warned villagers against cultivating their farmlands during the 2026 wet farming season. According to the source, the farmers disregarded the warning and proceeded with their farming activities, which provoked a large group of bandits to attack them.
Casualties and Missing Persons
The source stated that nine farmers were killed instantly, while many others fled into the forests. It is feared that the death toll may rise, as some of those who escaped sustained gunshot injuries of varying degrees, and others remain missing after running into the forests. The bandits pursued the fleeing farmers on motorcycles, firing sporadically.
“As at the time I am talking to you, only nine people have been confirmed dead. It is not clear the fate of many others who fled into the forest because the bandits pursued them while shooting sporadically,” the source added.
Continued Threats
The source also revealed that the gunmen have continued to issue warnings against farming and are threatening severe consequences for anyone who disobeys their orders.
