Northern Christian Leaders Condemn Persistent Terrorist Attacks During Holy Seasons
The Forum of Northern Christians, operating under the Northern Christian Association (NCA), has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as persistent terrorist attacks targeting Nigerians across Northern Nigeria. The group asserts that this alarming trend has cast a dark shadow over the Easter celebration, disrupting what should be a period of joy and spiritual reflection.
Recent Attacks in Jos and Kaduna Spark Outrage
In response to recent violent incidents, particularly in Jos, Plateau State, and parts of Kaduna State on Palm Sunday, the Northern Christian leaders expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. They highlighted that these attacks, especially in Jos North, have left families bereaved and communities displaced, occurring just as preparations for Easter were underway.
In a press statement released to mark the Easter celebration, NCA Chairman Reverend Joseph John Hayab and Secretary General Bishop Mohammed Naga lamented the situation. They stated, "instead of joy and spiritual reflection, many communities across Northern Nigeria are observing the season in an atmosphere defined by grief, uncertainty, and recurring violence."
Insecurity Extends Beyond Plateau State
The Forum emphasized that the crisis is not confined to Plateau State alone. It pointed to ongoing insecurity in Benue, Borno, Niger, and Taraba States, where killings and abductions persist. According to the group, several communities continue to grapple with violence, displacement, and fear, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
Hayab warned, "the continued recurrence of these incidents risks normalizing violence and deepening the suffering of affected communities, while also eroding public confidence in the capacity of the government to guarantee safety." The Forum raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures and the ability of authorities to protect citizens during critical periods like holy seasons.
Calls for Action and Unity
The NCA called on the Federal Government and security agencies to move beyond routine condemnations and demonstrate a stronger commitment through sustained and strategic action. They urged efforts aimed at ending the cycle of violence and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Additionally, the group appealed to religious, traditional, and community leaders to intensify efforts in promoting unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across Northern Nigeria. They stressed the need for collective responsibility in addressing the crisis, highlighting that all stakeholders must work together to foster a safer environment.
