A notorious bandit commander, Iliya Mai Rasha, was among more than 40 terrorists killed during a fierce gun battle in Guga Village, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Sunday evening. The encounter, which involved over 200 heavily armed bandits, marked a significant victory for security forces in the region.
Details of the Attack
Intelligence sources told security analyst Zagazola Makama that the attack occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on July 26. The assailants were drawn from criminal networks operating across Katsina and neighbouring Zamfara State, and were invited by notorious kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki to assault the community. The bandits arrived in large numbers, expecting to overwhelm local resistance.
However, a combined force of local hunters, the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC), and troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade mounted a coordinated response. They engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle that forced the bandits to retreat with heavy losses.
Casualties and Operational Success
Security sources confirmed that more than 40 bandits were neutralised during the encounter, including at least eight senior commanders. Among them was Iliya Mai Rasha, a notorious criminal linked to several deadly attacks in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Additionally, Idi Abasu Aiki reportedly sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The killing of Mai Rasha is considered a major operational success, as he had long been responsible for violent attacks, kidnappings, and other criminal activities across Tsafe and adjoining communities. The operation has dealt a significant blow to the criminal network operating along the Katsina–Zamfara axis.
Sacrifice of Local Volunteers
Despite the victory, the operation came at a cost. Five members of the hunters’ team were killed after being caught outside the frontline during the battle. Their sacrifice highlights the heavy price paid by local security volunteers in defending their communities from bandit violence.
Government and Military Response
Follow-up clearance operations are ongoing to recover abandoned weapons and pursue fleeing bandits. Military authorities and the Katsina State Government have commended the courage of the troops, hunters, and community watch personnel who repelled the attack and restored calm to the affected area. The joint effort underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between conventional forces and local security outfits in tackling banditry in northwestern Nigeria.
