In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across Plateau State, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed a 29-year-old 300-level student of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin. The attack, which occurred on Monday night, April 6, 2026, in Dum Village, Bachi District, Riyom Local Government Area, also left another victim injured, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.
Details of the Attack
The victim, identified as Badung Sunday, was an only child of his mother and was shot and killed during the ambush. According to a statement released by Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), the attack was premeditated and carried out by armed Fulani terrorists. The incident took place at approximately 7:49 pm, when the terrorists positioned themselves at the entrance of Dum Village to lay an ambush.
During the attack, two young men from the community, Badung Sunday and Dachomo Habila, unknowingly ran into the assailants. Tragically, Badung Sunday, a promising student whose future held great hope for his family and community, was shot and killed. In contrast, Dachomo Habila narrowly escaped unhurt, despite attempts by the terrorists to end his life as well.
Condemnation and Calls for Justice
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association, under the leadership of its National President, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a calculated and barbaric assault on innocent civilians. The association emphasized that this incident is a clear indication that terrorists continue to deliberately target peaceful Berom communities in areas such as Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South Local Government Areas.
In response, BYM has demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the attack. They have called on security agencies to swiftly track down the perpetrators and their sponsors, ensuring they are brought to justice. The association stressed that the people of Plateau State cannot continue to live under the constant threat of such violent attacks and urged security operatives to strengthen surveillance and protection around vulnerable communities that have repeatedly been targeted.
Community Response and Mourning
BYM extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late Badung Sunday, the people of Dum Village, and the entire Bachi District over this painful loss. While mourning the tragedy, the association also expressed gratitude for the escape of Dachomo Habila and offered prayers for comfort and strength to the bereaved family.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association reiterated that the continued killing of innocent people must not be treated with silence or indifference. They urged authorities to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators according to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, emphasizing the need for accountability to prevent future atrocities.
Broader Implications
This attack underscores the ongoing security crisis in Plateau State, where communal conflicts and banditry have led to numerous casualties and displacements. It raises concerns about the safety of educational institutions and students in the region, as well as the effectiveness of current security measures. The call for enhanced protection and justice highlights the urgent need for collaborative efforts between communities, security agencies, and government bodies to address the root causes of violence and ensure peace and stability in Plateau State.
