Police Defuse Bandits' Explosive in Zamfara

Police in Zamfara State have announced the discovery and safe destruction of an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by bandits along a major road in Tsafe Local Government Area. The device was found along the Kunchin Kalgo axis and was subsequently neutralised by officers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, according to a statement issued by the Zamfara State Police Command on Saturday.

Intent to Cause Mass Casualties

The police said preliminary investigations suggested the explosive was intended to inflict mass casualties on commuters and other road users travelling through the area. “Preliminary findings indicate that the explosive device was strategically planted to cause mass casualties among innocent road users and commuters,” the statement said.

Community Cooperation Key

The command attributed the discovery of the device to information provided by local residents, describing the development as evidence of the effectiveness of ongoing cooperation between security agencies and communities. “Through the Command’s robust community engagement strategy, effective partnerships, and sustained networking with local community members, timely and credible information was received, enabling the operatives to respond swiftly and neutralise the threat before any harm could occur,” the statement added.

Police authorities commended residents for their vigilance and support, noting that community cooperation remains critical to security operations across the state. The command said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for planting the device.

Security Patrols Intensified

Security patrols have also been intensified across the state to deter further attacks and protect travellers. “Additionally, convoy patrols have been deployed across the Command to prevent untoward activities and ensure the safety of residents and travellers,” the police said. The Commissioner of Police urged members of the public to remain alert and continue sharing useful information with security agencies, assuring them that all reports would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.

Zamfara is one of several north-western states grappling with armed banditry, with criminal groups frequently targeting communities, highways and travellers despite ongoing security operations by government forces.
