Retired Army Officer and Civilian Killed in Separate Suspected Herdsmen Attacks in Benue State
Benue State has been rocked by two separate violent incidents attributed to suspected herdsmen, resulting in the tragic deaths of a retired army officer and another civilian. The attacks occurred in the Kwande Local Government Area, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
Targeted Attack on Retired Officer in Anem Village
In a distressing development, a retired army officer identified as Chiayongo Jem'm was shot dead during an assault in Anem Village, Ikyurav-Ya, Kwande Local Government Area. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident took place on February 8, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m. Sources indicate that the deceased was specifically targeted by suspected Fulani herder bandits in what appears to be a premeditated attack.
Following the shooting, the victim's family removed the corpse to an unidentified mortuary located in Ikyogen. In response to the attack, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jato-Aka mobilized a joint patrol team to the scene. Security forces are currently combing nearby bushes in an effort to track down the suspects and effect arrests. The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation, with authorities promising to communicate further developments as they arise.
Second Fatal Incident in Tomatan Settlement
In a related and equally tragic event, suspected herdsmen launched another attack on Monday night in Tomatan, a settlement also within Kwande Local Government Area. This assault resulted in the death of one person, adding to the growing toll of violence in the area. The proximity in time and location of these two incidents suggests a pattern of heightened insecurity that local residents are forced to contend with.
These attacks underscore the persistent threat posed by armed groups in Benue State, particularly in rural communities where security presence may be limited. The killing of a retired military officer, who likely had experience in defense and security matters, adds a layer of concern regarding the boldness and capabilities of the perpetrators.
Local authorities and security agencies are under pressure to intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further loss of life. The community remains on edge as investigations continue and residents call for more robust protective measures to safeguard lives and property in the region.
