Terrorists Attack Kwara Community During Friday Prayer, Farmer Killed
Armed terrorists have launched a brazen attack on the Wodata community in Kwara State during Jumu'at prayer hours, resulting in the tragic death of a local farmer and widespread looting of shops. The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, in the Edu Local Government Area, sending panic through the agrarian settlement as residents fled for safety.
Details of the Deadly Invasion
The attackers reportedly stormed the community via Zambufu while many residents were observing Friday prayers at the mosque. A community source described the situation as "very terrifying" because nobody expected the assault during prayer time. The terrorists first moved around the community before some headed toward farms while others targeted shops, looting food items and other goods before villagers could react.
The victim, identified as Mr. Amos, was working on his cassava farm with his brother when the attackers struck. According to eyewitness accounts, Amos was on top of a tractor while people were loading cassava when the bandits appeared. Those on the ground immediately ran for their lives, but Amos tried to descend from the tractor and was shot in the stomach before he could escape.
Failed Rescue Attempt and Healthcare Challenges
Community members made desperate efforts to save the wounded farmer. "We tried to save him," the source explained. "They took him first to a nearby health facility, but they said the injury was too severe. They referred him to Ilorin, but he died on the way because he lost too much blood."
The source blamed the death partly on inadequate healthcare infrastructure in the area, noting that the community lacks functional hospitals equipped for emergency situations. "What we have is a primary health centre in Zambufu, and everybody knows it cannot handle serious gunshot injuries," the source lamented.
Heightened Community Fear
The attack occurred less than one kilometer from Wodata village, intensifying fears among farmers and villagers who say armed groups have become increasingly bold in launching attacks close to populated areas. Residents reported that the terrorists carted away provisions and foodstuffs from several shops during the invasion.
"People are living in fear because this is no longer just attacks in the bush; they are entering communities freely," the community source emphasized. The incident has created a climate of anxiety in the region, with farmers particularly concerned about their safety while working their lands.
Broader Security Concerns in Kwara
This attack follows a pattern of increasing violence in Kwara State. In a related development, gunmen attacked the Kemanji community around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, April 20, following an alleged threat letter circulated days earlier. That attack reportedly involved a prolonged gun battle with security forces, resulting in the deaths of at least five soldiers and the abduction of seven residents.
Witnesses from that incident said the assailants used explosives and overwhelmed local defense efforts during the raid, indicating a concerning escalation in tactics and firepower among armed groups operating in the region.
The combined incidents highlight growing security challenges in Kwara State, with communities facing threats from well-armed groups that appear to operate with increasing impunity.
