Bandits Attack Zamfara Community, Burn Four Residents Alive Over Refusal to Pay Illegal Levies
In a horrific incident that has shocked residents, armed bandits attacked Gwargwabe village in the Nahuce District of Bungudu Local Government Area, Zamfara State, resulting in the tragic death of four individuals who were burned alive. The attack, which occurred on Thursday evening, was reportedly carried out because the villagers refused to comply with demands for illegal levies imposed by the assailants.

According to Alhaji Sulaiman Marafa, the district head of Kekun Nahuce, the bandits initially targeted the nearby Karakkai community at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. They fired sporadically, causing widespread panic among the villagers. However, the residents of Karakkai demonstrated remarkable courage by resisting the assault and forcing the attackers to retreat.
Undeterred, the bandits then moved to Gwargwabe village, where they set several houses ablaze. This act of arson led to the deaths of four individuals who were trapped in the flames. The victims included three men and one woman, whose identities have not been fully disclosed. Additionally, the attack resulted in significant property damage, with about 10 animals and no fewer than 50 grain silos destroyed. Three other residents sustained gunshot injuries during the violence.

On Friday morning, joint security forces and emergency responders visited the affected communities to assess the situation and provide assistance. The injured victims were promptly taken to a hospital in Nahuce for medical treatment, while efforts are ongoing to support the affected families and restore calm to the area. The victims were buried on Friday in a solemn ceremony attended by community members.
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the delay in the arrival of security operatives after the attack was reported. Represented by his deputy, Mani Malam Mummuni, at the funeral prayers and burial, Governor Lawal pledged the government's continued commitment to taking all necessary steps to end banditry in the state. In a statement signed by Shehu Adamu Gusau, the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Lawal urged residents to accept the incident as an 'act of destiny' while announcing plans to establish a military base in Gwargwabe to curb further attacks.
