Twenty-two Buddhist monks have been arrested at an airport in Sri Lanka after customs officials discovered 110 kilograms (242 pounds) of cannabis concealed in their luggage. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 25, when the monks arrived at Colombo's airport from Thailand.
Details of the Seizure
Customs officials reported that each monk was found carrying approximately 5 kilograms of Kush, a highly potent strain of cannabis. The drugs were hidden inside false compartments built into their luggage. The monks, most of whom were students, had been on an all-expenses-paid four-day holiday in Thailand, sponsored by an unidentified individual.
Arrests and Investigation
Upon their arrival, the monks were detained. A 23rd monk, believed to be the organizer of the trip, was later arrested in a Colombo suburb. According to a police spokesman, the organizer had told the other monks that the packages were donations and that a van would collect them. The monks did not join the trip themselves.
Police from the Narcotics Bureau examined mobile phones belonging to the monks, which contained photos and videos of them enjoying their holiday in casual clothing. The monks, who came from various temples across Sri Lanka, were remanded in custody for seven days after appearing in court on Sunday, April 26, pending further questioning.
Police Statements
Police told BBC Sinhala that they believe the monks may not have been aware of what they were carrying. The drugs were found among school supplies and sweets in their luggage.
