Kenya Police Arrest 9 Suspects in Gang Rape During Circumcision Procession
9 Arrested for Gang Rape in Kenya's Meru County

Kenyan authorities have apprehended nine individuals in connection with a brutal gang rape that occurred during a traditional event, sparking nationwide fury and demands for justice.

Horrific Assault During Ceremony

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the violent sexual attack took place on December 1, 2025, in Laare Town, Meru County. The incident happened while the perpetrators were participating in a traditional circumcision procession.

A video of the assault, which was later circulated online, captured the heinous act. Alerted by distressed members of the public, officers from the Laare Police Station rushed to the scene.

They found the young female victim in a state of utter despair, with her clothes torn. The police immediately escorted her to Nyambene Hospital for urgent medical attention and care.

Swift Police Action and Arrests

Law enforcement launched a swift and extensive manhunt for the suspects. On the day of the incident, three suspects were initially arrested.

In a statement released on Wednesday, December 3, the DCI announced the arrest of six more men following targeted raids. The operations were conducted in the Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama areas based on forensic leads.

The six additional suspects taken into custody are:

  • Dennis Mwirigi
  • Ismael Gichuge
  • Elijah Muriki
  • Isaac Ntomauta
  • Joseph Marete
  • Phineas Mutali

All nine suspects were arraigned in court on Wednesday. The prosecution successfully requested their detention until December 10, 2025, to allow investigations to continue. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is set to be enjoined in the case.

Public Outcry and Calls for Justice

The case has triggered widespread condemnation across Kenya. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced a Sh300,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of any remaining suspects.

Sonko, who highlighted the incident on social media, described the attack as "inhumane, criminal, and unacceptable." He urged swift and firm justice for the survivor and stated his team is coordinating with local law enforcement in Meru.

The assault has intensified public anger, with rights groups and community leaders demanding greater accountability and stronger measures to protect women and girls from sexual violence. The incident has become a focal point in the ongoing national conversation about gender-based violence and safety during cultural events.
