In a landmark ruling that has been hailed as a significant victory for child protection, a 30-year-old school security guard, Chidiebere Kalu, has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexually abusing a 10-year-old female pupil. The judgment was delivered on August 5, 2026, by the Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State.

Kalu, who was attached to Radiant Glory Academy in Umuichichi, Aba, faced charges stemming from reported incidents involving the child within the school environment. The case was pursued through the criminal justice system following a report by the child's family. The court convicted Kalu on two counts: indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor.
On the first count, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine. On the second count, he received a one-year prison term with an option of a N200,000 fine. Both sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Kalu will serve a total of one year behind bars.
