Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed profound shock over the passing of the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State and Grand Chief Imam of Yewaland, Sheikh Sikirulai Babalola. The revered Islamic cleric died on Saturday at the age of 98.
Governor Abiodun's Tribute at Burial Ceremony
The governor spoke during the burial ceremony of the late Islamic scholar, which took place at Igan Alalade in Yewa North Local Council Area of the state. Abiodun described the late Sheikh Babalola as a devoted Muslim and a respected Islamic scholar who attained the highest level of leadership within the Muslim community in Ogun State.
According to the governor, the deceased not only served as the Grand Chief Imam of Yewaland but also held the position of President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State, making him one of the most influential Islamic leaders in the state. He further characterized the late cleric as a man of integrity, generosity, and unwavering faith, who left behind enduring legacies through his selfless service to humanity and the Muslim community.
Loss to Religious Harmony
The governor stressed that Ogun State, renowned for its religious harmony and tolerance, had lost one of its foremost spiritual leaders. He noted that the cleric's death represented a painful loss to both his immediate family and the entire state, given his significant contributions to promoting peace and unity.
Minister's Remarks
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Kunle Salako, paid tribute to the late Sheikh, saying he dedicated his entire life to the service of humanity through the teachings of Islam. Salako emphasized the cleric's commitment to charitable works and community development.
Lecture on Life and Death
In a brief lecture during the burial, the Head of the Department of Arabic Studies at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Dr. Raji Akano, urged attendees to make meaningful use of their lives while alive. He stressed that death is inevitable for all humans and that the late Chief Imam had completed his earthly assignment and returned to his Creator. Akano called on the living to lead impactful lives and remain conscious of the hereafter.
