Prominent Nigerian activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has been released from police custody after spending two weeks in detention. His release follows a court order granting him bail in a case linked to a controversial kidnap ransom payment in Edo State.
The Controversial Ransom and Allegations
The situation stems from a kidnapping incident where a couple was abducted in Edo state. Harrison Gwamnishu acted as a middleman between the family and the kidnappers. The abductors demanded a ransom of N20 million for the couple's release.
However, a dispute erupted when the kidnappers alleged that only N14.6 million was delivered to them, claiming that N5.4 million was removed from the total sum and replaced with counterfeit notes. Following this, the captors released the pregnant wife but continued to hold the husband hostage.
These allegations led the police to invite Gwamnishu for questioning regarding the missing funds from the ransom payment.
Court-Ordered Release and Community Welcome
Last week, a High Court in Edo State granted Harrison Gwamnishu bail, paving the way for his release from detention. He announced his freedom publicly this evening, sharing a video that captured an emotional moment.
The video showed members of his community giving him a rousing and celebratory welcome upon his return, indicating strong local support for the activist.
Gwamnishu's Statement and Denial of Arrest
In a detailed statement shared alongside the video, Harrison Gwamnishu clarified the circumstances of his detention. He strongly denied being arrested by the police. Instead, he stated that as a law-abiding citizen, he voluntarily presented himself to assist with the investigation.
He emphasized that he has not been formally charged, as the matter is still under review by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Contrary to what some might expect given his history of campaigning against police misconduct, Gwamnishu praised the conduct of the Edo State Police Command. He specifically thanked the State Commissioner of Police for his "wisdom and professionalism" and commended the investigation team led by CSP Osagie for their care during his detention.
He also expressed profound gratitude to his legal team, comprising Barr. Olayiwola Afolabi (SAN), Barr. Dele Igbinedion, Barr. Favour Ajuebor, and Barr. Awele Ideal, for securing his release.
The case continues to develop as authorities await the DPP's legal advice, leaving the core allegations surrounding the N20 million ransom unresolved.
