Couple Arraigned for Alleged Child Abuse and Attempted Murder
A Children, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Offences Court in Awka, Anambra State, has remanded a couple, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, over allegations of child abuse and attempted murder of an 11-year-old boy. The case has drawn widespread attention after images of the victim, whose body was covered in wounds, circulated on social media for over a week.
Victim's Condition Sparks Outrage
The inhumane treatment of the minor attracted the intervention of Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, among other notable figures. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the child had been placed in the couple's care before the alleged abuse occurred.
Court Proceedings
The defendants face a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted murder. Police prosecutor Chinyere Okechukwu, a police inspector, informed the court that the offenses took place in the Isiowulu community, within the Awada area of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra. She stated that the couple conspired and attempted to murder the 11-year-old boy entrusted to them.
The charges contravene Sections 495(a) and 275(a) of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Vol. II Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 1991, as amended. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Remand and Adjournment
Chief Magistrate U.E. Onochie ordered the defendants to be remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned until July 22 for a hearing, allowing time for further investigation and legal proceedings.
