Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have concluded investigations into several serious cases of sexual and child abuse-related offences. Among the cases is that of a father who has been having an affair with his daughter and infected her with a serious viral disease. The five suspects will be arraigned today, 6th May 2026, before the Special Court sitting in Awka.
Details of the Cases
The command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the Gender Unit of the SCID received a case of defilement of a 16-year-old girl from the Ogbunike Police Division Headquarters on 22nd April 2026. Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, Chukwuemeka Chidiebere, a 26-year-old security personnel at an estate in the area, allegedly attacked the victim while she was on her way to visit a friend within the estate. He reportedly dragged her into an uncompleted building where he forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The suspect has made a confessional statement.
On 23rd April 2026, a case of defilement of an 11-year-old girl was transferred from Neni Police Divisional Headquarters. The suspect, Uchenna Muojama, aged 36, allegedly lured the victim inside his barbing saloon and forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. A medical report has been obtained for court proceedings.
In a similar development, on 21st April 2025, a case of defilement was transferred from Central Police Station Awka, where a 52-year-old suspect, Chukwudi Nwayata, took advantage of the mental condition of an 11-year-old girl, lured her to his house, and forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
Incest Case Involving HIV
Furthermore, on 23rd April 2026, a case of incest involving a 20-year-old victim was transferred from Oko Police Station. The suspect, Rapuruchukwu Ezenandu, aged 46, allegedly engaged in sexual relations with the victim since she was 17 years old. The case came to light after the victim tested HIV positive during a hospital visit. The suspect has made a confessional statement.
Child Abuse Case
In another development, on 28th April 2026, a female suspect named Eucharia Ezenwanne allegedly subjected two children, Echetuna Ezenwanne (6 years) and Chikaima Ezenwanne (4 years), to severe physical abuse, reportedly using a wire to inflict injuries. The suspect claimed to have adopted the children from a motherless babies' home in Onitsha.
Ikenga concluded by quoting the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, who described the cases as heinous and unacceptable. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, especially children, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
