The Anambra State Government has confirmed that a 10-year-old boy brutally assaulted by his guardians is now receiving medical care under state protection. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, made the disclosure on Monday in Awka.
Incident Details
The boy, whose name is withheld, was allegedly assaulted last week in Awada, an urban community in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area. Video clips circulating online show the child with severe burns. Angry residents were seen confronting and hitting the couple believed to be responsible.
Government Response
Onyekesi vowed that the couple would face prosecution. She said: "I thank the caring people of Anambra for reporting this. The boy is receiving treatment. My team and the Obosi woman leader visited him. The offenders must face the law."
Police Action
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said three suspects have been arrested: Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40; his wife Chisom Chukwuyere, 30; and a 16-year-old boy. Mrs Chukwuyere confessed to using burning plastic to inflict burns. The victim has been provided with necessary care, and evidence is being gathered for prosecution.
