Army Troops Apprehend Suspected Gunrunners in Taraba, Seize 444 Rounds of Ammunition

In a significant security breakthrough, troops from the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army have successfully arrested two individuals suspected of illegal arms trafficking and recovered a substantial cache of ammunition in Taraba State. The operation, which underscores the military's ongoing efforts to combat criminality, took place in the Wukari Local Government Area.

Details of the Arrest and Recovery

Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Thursday, March 19, 2026. According to the statement, the arrests were made by troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari, who are part of Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

The suspects, identified as Mr. Wisdom Soomga, a 32-year-old from Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State, and Mr. Elisha Danladi, a 38-year-old native of Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State, were intercepted during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road. They were reportedly riding a motorcycle at the time of their apprehension.

A thorough search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. In addition to the ammunition, troops also seized cash totaling N29,200, two mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, various personal belongings, and the motorcycle used for transportation. Both suspects and all recovered items are currently in custody for further investigation to determine the source and intended destination of the ammunition.

Commendation and Continued Vigilance

Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, the Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation WHIRL STROKE, praised the troops for their vigilance and prompt response. He emphasized that their actions align with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff to decisively eliminate criminal elements and enhance security across Taraba State.

General Akaliro urged the troops to sustain their momentum and remain resolute in efforts to rid the area of all forms of criminality. He also reassured law-abiding citizens of the Nigerian Army's unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while calling on the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious activities.

Furthermore, the Commander reiterated his commitment to a robust reward and disciplinary system, noting that officers and soldiers who demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and courage during operations will be duly recognized and rewarded.
