Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the Government Day Secondary School in Kautikari Village, Chibok Local Council Area of Borno State, resulting in the death of one person and the destruction of several classrooms by fire.
Attack Details
Confirming the incident to The Guardian on Sunday, the Education Secretary of Chibok Local Council Area, Malah Kyari, stated that the attack occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Saturday and targeted the junior secondary school section. He reported that one person was killed and a block containing five classrooms and an office was set ablaze at Kautikari Junior Secondary School.
Security Response
The Public Relations Officer of Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, also confirmed the attack, noting that security forces repelled the assailants as they attempted to infiltrate Maiduguri around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. He stated that the suspected insurgents encountered strong resistance from joint security forces, which prevented further casualties, and that intensive patrols are ongoing in the area.
Samaila Manza, the zonal inspector for Local Government and Emirate Affairs responsible for Bama, Chibok, Gwoza, Askira/Uba, and Damboa, also confirmed the attack. He mentioned being informed of the incident but noted that the full extent of the damage was yet to be verified.
NYSC Suspension in Niger State
In a separate development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the suspension of the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course for prospective corps members deployed to Niger State. A notice on the scheme's official X handle yesterday attributed the suspension to ongoing renovation work at the orientation camp. The statement expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to affected prospective corps members and their parents, adding that those affected would be contacted at short notice regarding where and when to report for their orientation course. The 2026 Batch B Stream I orientation exercise was initially scheduled to commence on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, and run until Tuesday, June 30, 2026, nationwide.
Bandit Attack in Niger State
Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three people at Pissa Village in Borgu Local Council Area by suspected bandits. The command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that the bandits attacked the village around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, setting some houses on fire. The military engaged the bandits, but further details remain sketchy. Local sources reported that a large convoy of armed bandits, estimated to be over 100 and riding on motorcycles, carried out a coordinated assault on the Pissa community, forcing residents to flee their homes for safety.
