Britney Spears Probation for Reckless Driving

Popstar Britney Spears has been sentenced to 12 months of probation following her arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The 44-year-old singer pleaded guilty at her arraignment at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday, two months after she was taken into custody for DUI.

Plea Deal Details

Spears, who recently completed a three-week stint in rehab after her March 4 arrest, did not appear in court. Her lawyer, Michael Goldstein, entered the guilty plea on her behalf. As part of a plea deal known as a 'wet reckless,' she received a sentence of 12 months probation, one day in jail (which she has already served), and a mandatory enrollment in a three-month alcohol and drug education program.

The 'wet reckless' plea allows a driver to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs, a lesser charge that carries a lighter sentence. This deal is typically reserved for defendants with no prior DUI history, a low blood alcohol level, no injury or crash involved, and who demonstrate self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation.

Additional Court Orders

Ventura County Superior Court Commissioner Matthew Nemerson also fined Spears $721 and ordered her to see a psychologist once a week and a psychiatrist twice a month. The court further instructed the singer to abstain from alcohol and non-prescription drugs. Additionally, police are authorized to search her vehicle without a warrant if she is pulled over again.

The case stemmed from her arrest earlier this year, which drew significant media attention due to her celebrity status and recent personal struggles.
